The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) should recruit investigators who are independent or come from outside the police and the Attorney'€™s General Office (AGO), says a survey released by anti-corruption watchdog Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW).

Of 1,500 respondents, '€œ82.5 percent stated that KPK investigators [should come from] outside the police and the AGO,'€ said ICW researcher Firdaus Ilyas in Jakarta on Thursday as quoted by Antara news agency.

People also believed that the KPK did a better job eradicating corruption than the police and the AGO, with a grade of 7.8 given to the KPK and 5.6 and 5.3 points to the AGO and the police, respectively.

The KPK had the support of 97.7 percent of respondents. '€œ[In addition to that], up to 85.3 percent of respondents stated that the KPK should have the authority to conduct phone tapping and necessary follow-up actions,'€ said Firdaus.

He added that regarding plans to revise several points in the 2002 KPK Law, the issue of phone tapping should be maintained.

Firdaus said that '€œany revision [of the 2002 KPK Law] should strengthen the commission, not weaken it by limiting its authority'€.

Up to 78.4 percent of survey respondents acknowledged the need for a policy to protect the heads and employees of the KPK from any attempts to criminalize them.

As for institutions that the KPK should pay particular attention to, the respondents chose the House of Representatives, the police and the AGO as their top three. (kes)(+)
