ndonesia will make changes to the mascot for the 2018 Asian Games after criticism that the newly unveiled bird of paradise looked more like a chicken.

Youth and Sports Ministry spokesman Gatot S. Dewa Broto said Tuesday that the changes would be finalized over the next two to four months.

The mascot, called Drawa, was launched Dec. 27 by Vice President Jusuf Kalla and is named after the cendrawasih (bird of paradise), which is only found in Indonesia'€™s easternmost Papua province, New Guinea and eastern Australia.

However, many online critics have said the design makes it look more like a chicken than a bird of paradise, while others have said the mascot was dated or inappropriate for a major event.

'€œThe reason for the changes is that there was a lot of criticism and resistance from the public,'€ Gatot said. '€œWe'€™ll retain the '€˜Drawa'€™, but simpler than the current one, which is too colorful and seems to be running against trends in contemporary design.'€

The games'€™ logo is a silhouette of the bird, while the Drawa mascot is dressed in pencak silat attire.

'€œMr. Minister of Sports, were you not ashamed to launch the mascot? We are not in a crisis of designers,'€ wrote Joko Anwar on Twitter.

'€œDrawa is taken from cen'€™DRAWA'€™sih, but once we see it, we think it is a rooster,'€ tweeted Jon Warif.

Indonesia, which last staged the games in 1962, was again named the host in 2014 after Vietnam relinquished its hosting rights due to financial concerns. The Aug. 18 to Sept. 2 event will be held in four provinces '€” Jakarta, Banten, South Sumatra and West Java.
