The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) provincial administration will give names to 14 small islands, which border with Australia and Timor Leste to prevent claims of ownership by the neighboring countries.
A ceremony for the event is slated for May 14, 2016, to be attended by Governor Frans Lebu Raya and Kupang Naval Base commander Brig. Gen. Siswoyo Santoso.
“The names are to be given to prevent ownership claims by neighboring countries,” Kupang Naval Base spokesperson Capt. Johan Hariyanto told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
The province has 1,192 islands, 92 of which are nameless. Actually, according to Johan, those islands have been given names by local communities but they were not registered by their respective regional administrations.
