he executions of 14 drug convicts will take place in the early hours of Friday, a source confirmed on Thursday following an escalation in security on Nusakambangan prison island in Cilacap, Central Java.
"Fourteen people will be executed, but sorry, I can't release their names yet," a source from Central Java Prosecutor's Office, who asked for anonymity, told The Jakarta Post on Thursday, confirming that the executions would take place after midnight.
Security was tightened earlier this week following reports of the executions. In addition to 1,500 police personnel assigned to guard the Nusakambangan area, Army and Navy personnel are also involved in the heightened security measures.

Several Army personnel were seen guarding Wijaya Pura Dock and the surrounding area since Thursday morning while Navy personnel are patrolling the waters surrounding the high-security prison island. The heightened security is aimed at maintaining a conducive climate around Cilacap in the lead-up to the executions, Cilacap Military Commander Lt. Col. Deni Gunawan told journalists on Thursday.
Military personnel are also escorting family members and lawyers visiting the condemned on Nusakambangan. (rin)
