Andovi da Lopez may not be a TV celebrity, but he has stolen the attention of social media users and become a huge entertainer in his own right.
Andovi and his brother Jovial are the duo on skinnyindonesian24, a widely popular YouTube channel that boasts a stunning 620,000 subscribers with some videos attracting up to 3 million views.
When they made their first video blog, titled Modus (Hidden purpose) in 2012, they simply wanted to rant on camera about how every interaction between the sexes was seen as having a hidden purpose in Indonesia. Andovi said he never imagined that the video would go viral.
“Back then, nobody spoke to a camera to talk about their day. My first video went viral because it was different from anything on TV at the time,” he said.
Since then, they have been entertaining people with their videos. While some take hours to film, others, like the widely popular Jokowi vs. Prabowo Rap, Battle for the Presidency took months to complete.
Like many other YouTubers, the brothers work on their videos themselves.
“Me and my brother, we do everything ourselves. We make our own scripts, take turns in directing and edit our videos ourselves.”
As a social media celebrity, his interaction with viewers, who he refuses to call fans, is very important.
“Mainstream media celebrities have millions of followers, but when you read the comments, you can tell there is a difference in how we take advantage of social media. Most of the comments on my page are actual interaction with viewers; they don’t just post spam.”
