bus loaded with protesters set to take part in Friday’s rally to demand the immediate imprisonment of incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama on allegations of religious defamation, collided with a truck at the 115-kilometer point of the Cipali toll road in Subang, West Java, on Thursday morning.  

West Java Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus said one passenger died, while 15 others were injured in the accident. The bus was carrying 62 passengers, reportedly members of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI). The victim was identified as Sarjono, 47, a resident of Klegen Gatak, Sewon, Bantul, Yogyakarta.

The injured victims were treated at the nearby Ciereng city hospital in Subang and Ciuderes city hospital in Majalengka.

"Other uninjured passengers continued their trip to Jakarta by hopping on other buses, according to the bus driver," Yusri was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.

According to eyewitnesses, the bus was heading to Cikopo from Palimanan at high speed at 3:30 a.m.. The bus, driven by Ahmad Sakir, 31, rammed into a slower truck loaded with sand, which reportedly suddenly switched into the fast lane.  

Yusri said police were still questioning several eyewitnesses regarding the accident. (dmr)
