achmawati Soekarnoputri, the daughter of the country’s first president Sukarno, has denied trying to use the massive rally against Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama on Dec. 2 at the National Monument (Monas) to topple the current government.

"I strongly deny the treason accusations. I didn't commit treason and I never attempted to commit treason against the current government," Rachmawati said in her house at Jl. Jati Padang Raya, Pasar Baru, South Jakarta, on Wednesday.

The sister of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (P-DIP) chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri said she had planned to protest in front of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and House of Representatives in Senayan, South Jakarta, on Dec. 2, to submit two petitions.

Police earlier named Rachmawati a treason suspect. Along with 10 other political activists, she was arrested on Friday. She was then released but remains a suspect.

The first petition was an expression of support for the protest from the National Movement to Safeguard the Indonesia Ulema Council’s Fatwa (GNPF-MUI) to demand the arrest of Ahok, while the second petition stated her request to the MPR to return the 1945 Constitution to its original form.

Rachmawati who is also the Gerindra Party deputy chairperson for ideological affairs, said that she had announced the planned protest to the police and also told them that 10,000 to 20,000 people would join the protest in front of the House.  (jun)
