wenty-five passengers were injured in an elevator crash at Blok M Square shopping mall in South Jakarta on Friday afternoon.
“All the victims were taken to the Central Pertamina Hospital [RSPP, in South Jakarta] and are receiving treatment,” said Agus Waluyo, an officer with the Melawai subdistrict of the Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP).
The victims suffered a range of injuries but no fatalities were reported.
Agus said the elevator was traveling from the seventh floor at 12:45 p.m. when it broke loose at the third floor and fell to the basement.
“The number of passengers was greater than the elevator’s capacity,” Agus said.
The alarm reportedly went off indicating the elevator to be over capacity, but none of the passengers stepped out of the elevator.
A police spokesperson, Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono, said officers from the South Jakarta Police were investigating the case.
“We’re prioritizing treatment of the victims,” he added.
