The Jambi city administration plans to develop a mass transportation system to reduce traffic and improve air quality.

The administration is preparing supporting facilities, such as bus stops that will be developed next year,

Jambi Mayor Syarif Fasha said on Friday. The constructions of bus stops, he said, would also involve the private sector.

“We have made the designs for the bus stops and we plan not to build them using the regional budget, but with funds from investors,” he said.

Fasha explained that the central government had planned to provide the city with 25 buses, but there was not yet clarity on the plan.

Therefore, the city aims to cooperate with private companies or investors to realize the plan. In addition, the Jambi administration is also waiting for the deliberation of a draft bylaw on the establishment of a holding company for a region-owned enterprise (BUMD) to manage the operation of the buses.

Jambi Legislative Council speaker M. Nasir said the council aimed to complete deliberations on the bylaw this year. (rin)
