National scene: 2018 regional elections to cost Rp 10.5t

T

he General Election Commission (KPU) has estimated that the cost to carry out next year’s simultaneous regional elections could reach Rp 10.5 trillion (US$ 735 million).

The calculation was based on the total budget proposed by regions slated to hold local elections, said KPU chairman Arief Budiman.

“But the realized funds could be less than the proposal,” he said on Thursday as quoted by tempo.co.

The KPU is set to hold the country’s third simultaneous election in June 2018, with 17 provinces, 39 municipalities and 115 regencies slated to participate.

“Our preparation is guaranteed by the regional elections’ operational budget,” he said.

Each region allocated its budget in the regional grant agreement documents (NPHD), which must be submitted to the KPU before Sept. 27.
