hile people usually dump water used to rinse rice, citizens in Pulo Geulis village, Babakan Pasar subdistrict, Central Bogor, use the water to grow plants in their neighborhood.
Through the tabungan air beras (rice water savings) program, each household in Pulo Geulis village collects a bucket of rice water per day. Babakan subdistrict head Rokib Alhudri said Friday that residents in the area started to save the rice water after getting information from the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB).
"We received training on the benefits of rice water. Since then, instead of dumping it, we collect one bucket of rice water per day. Citizens will save the water for several days before using it for fertilizer," Rokib said as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
The program is also in line with the residents' efforts to make their areas greener by creating plant nurseries. The rice water, Rokib explained, was used to water the plants, which are later distributed to all residents who plant them in their own houses.
"We plant vegetables and medical herbs, so the citizens can reap the benefits," Rokib added. (rdi)
