ersela Lamongan FC goalkeeper Choirul Huda passed away following an on-field collision with teammate Ramon Rodriguez and Semen Padang FC striker Marcel Sacramento as he attempted to collect a ball that threatened his net.
Choirul, who has defended his team’s net since 1999, was seen clutching his head and neck before being rushed to Dr. Soegiri Regional Hospital. Choirul wore a respiratory supporting device during the trip to the hospital.
Zaki Mubarok, a doctor at the hospital, said Choirul was still breathing when he arrived for treatment.
“He died from severe head and neck trauma,” Zaki said as quoted by kompas.com on Sunday.
Persela Lamongan FC media officer Andika added that the veteran player was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m. after undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The Liga 1 match was held at Surajaya Stadium in Lamongan regency. Lamongan Regent Fadeli, regional secretary Yuhronur Efendi, Lamongan City Council speaker Khairudin and Lamongan Police deputy chief Comr. Imara Utama were among the 9,700 spectators at the match. Persela Lamongan beat Semen Padang FC 2-0.
Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) deputy chief Joko Driyono said the PSSI would form a team to gather information about the incident.
