A man died on Wednesday after being beaten by a mob for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor in East Kuningan, South Jakarta.
“The man, identified as Chevin, had [reportedly] admitted his crime,” said crime division chief of the South Jakarta Police, Sr. Comr. Bismo Teguh Prakoso as reported by tempo.co.
Chevin allegedly took a five year-old child into a mosque toilet on Nov. 20. A resident, identified only as AG, who knew the child’s parents, witnessed the incident and knocked on toilet door and asked Chevin to step outside.
AG reported the incident to the child’s parent after Chevin did not respond. AG, the child’s father, identified only as I, and other respondents then busted in.
Furious, the child’s father pinned Chevin by the neck while others beat him until he collapsed.
According to Bismo, the incident was recorded on a mobile phone. The police used the footage to investigate the incident.
So far the police have arrested four suspects identified as I, A, AG and B.
“We regret that people have the tendency to act as self-appointed vigilantes,” he said.
Bismo said assault cases should be reported to the police, who would enforce the law. (gis)
