Indonesian golfer Rory Hie has secured a spot in this week’s Maybank Championship, which will tee-off on Thursday at the Saujana Golf and Country Club in Kuala Lumpur.
Rory’s participation in the championship is part of the organizers’ commitment to supporting golfers from Southeast Asian countries.
The 30-year-old golfer is part of a select group of five ASEAN professionals -- including Michael Tran of Vietnam, Naing Lin of Myanmar, Quincy Quek of Singapore and Justin Quiban of the Philippines -- for this year’s tournament under the special ASEAN category established by Maybank.
“It has always been Maybank’s aim to provide opportunities for qualified ASEAN players to stand a chance at competing in a world class event,” said Datuk Abdul Farid Alias, Group President and Chief Executive Officer of Maybank, in a statement.
Rory, currently ranked 74th on the Asian Tour Order of Merit, started playing golf at the age of five before heading to the United States, where he joined the local junior circuit. He also became the first Indonesian to earn playing rights on the Asian Tour when he finished in the top 40 in the 2009 Qualifying School in Thailand.
