resident Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo officiated the start of the development of Gen. Sudirman Airport in Purbalingga, Central Java, on Monday. The airport had until been known as Wirasaba Air Base.
Jokowi said the airport would be upgraded and expanded to meet the high demand for air transportation from surrounding cities.
"The southern and western parts of Central Java don't have a proper airport. That’s why today we are starting the development of the 115-hectare Gen. Sudirman Airport in Purbalingga regency,” Jokowi said in a statement.
In the first stage of development, the airport will be equipped with a 1,600-meter runway. The runway will be extended to 2,500-m in the second stage.
"With around a 3,000-square-meter terminal, the airport will be able to accommodate around 300,000 passengers a year. We hope the airport will be finished in 2019,” he added, hoping that the airport would revive business and industry around the city. (hol/dmr)
