T

he lifeless body of a baby boy was found on Wednesday in a garbage bin outside the Supreme Court in Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta.

Cempaka Putih Police chief Comr. Rosiana Nurwidjajati said the infant, estimated to be six months old, was found by janitor Kasdiah when she was emptying the garbage bin.

The baby had been placed inside a brown box that was wrapped in a white plastic bag, said Rosiana. Kasdiah had opened the plastic bag and discovered the baby.

“The baby was already dead when she [Kasdiah] opened the plastic,” Rosiana said on Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.

The infant's body was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) for an examination while the police continued to investigate the incident.

On the same day, a male newborn was found abandoned inside a box on a vacant plot on Jl. Gurame 9 in the Depok Jaya subdistrict of Pancoran Mas, Depok.

Several residents who had been told of the scavenger's discovery reported the finding to local security personnel.

The live baby, estimated to be 1 to 2 days old, was taken to Depok Jaya community health center for medical treatment.

Pancoran Mas Police chief Comr. Roni Wowor said residents also found a letter inside the box, apparently written by the baby’s parent.

"In the letter, the parent expressed their hope that whoever found the baby would take good care of him," said Roni.

The letter went on to explain that the baby had been abandoned because of economic difficulties. (cal)
