joint team comprising 1,558 personnel from the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police (Polri) has been deployed to secure train stations during mudik, the annual Idul Fitri exodus, which the Transportation Ministry projects will peak on June 10-11.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said it was important for the authorities to take additional security measures at train stations, as the train was the preferred transportation mode among mudik travelers. He added that train tickets for key departure dates were sold out.
“I have requested the TNI and Polri to assist me in securing the stations,” Budi said in Jakarta on Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
The minister added that 69 dogs from the police's K9 unit had been readied to help secure the stations against terror threats.
State-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) expects to serve over 4 million passengers during the upcoming mass exodus, a 3 percent increase from the total number of passengers during Idul Fitri last year. (dpk/ebf)
