43-year-old man suspected to be suffering from depression set fire to his neighbor’s house in Gang Damai in Cakung, East Jakarta, on Monday.

The house was being rented by Pinondang and Budiman Marbun, both were in the house during the incident, Cakung Police criminal unit head Comr. Tom Sirait said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Tuesday, adding that the incident occurred at 1.30 p.m. The police said the perpetrator was believed to suffer from depression.

The two residents were both mending their fishing lines while sitting on the porch when the perpetrator came to the house and poured gasoline on the front door. The man set fire to the gasoline with a lit cigarette he was smoking.

Pinondang and Budiman suffered burns to their legs and chests and were rushed to the hospital.

The perpetrator fled the scene and was immediately pursued by the police, Tom said. The motive for the attack is still unknown. (acr)
