uspected car thieves have made millions of rupiah by selling the cars in East Jakarta. The police arrested two suspects, identified as Azizah Azmari and Muhamad, on Monday.
East Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Tony Surya Putra said reports had been lodged by several people whose cars had been stolen, most of whom were car rental owners. At least 44 cars have been reported stolen in the case.
“The perpetrators committed the crime by renting cars from car rental companies or individuals,” Tony said as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com on Tuesday.
“They rented cars for two or three days, which cost them Rp 350,000 [US$23.50] to Rp 400,000. Once they had the cars, they immediately sold them,” he added.
Tony said they often changed their phone numbers, making it difficult for the police to locate their whereabouts. The suspects reportedly confessed to the police that they had been doing the crime for six months, adding that they not only stole cars in East Jakarta but also in areas throughout Greater Jakarta.
They earned about Rp 30 million for each stolen car they sold, the police said. Of the 44 cars, the police have seized 14. (vla)
