he West Java administration plans to extend a runway of Kertajati International Airport in Majalengka, West Java, from 2,500 meters to 3,000 m.
“The extension of the runway at Kertajati Airport will allow larger aircraft to land there,” said West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil after meeting with Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan in Jakarta recently.
He said the extension project was planned to be completed by the end of 2018.
He said the airport, which began operations on May 24, would be used by umrah (minor haj) pilgrims from Oct. 13 in cooperation with Lion Air Group.
“Everything has been clear. God willing, the first umrah flight will be on Oct. 13,” Ridwan said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
The governor said the umrah flight was opened to accommodate the large number of pilgrims from West Java. “More and more West Java people want to go on umrah. This indicates the improvement of the province's economy,” he added. (bbn)
