he Medan District Court in North Sumatra sentenced to death on Thursday two drivers from neighboring Aceh for smuggling 14.5 kilograms of crystal meth and more than 70,000 ecstasy pills.
The court found the two drivers, Zulkifli Ismail and Dedi Syahputra, guilty of violating the 2009 law on narcotics in two separate trials on Thursday.
Judge Domingus Silaban, who was among the judges handling both cases, said that Zulkifli and Dedi smuggled the illicit drugs from Aceh to Medan in February “following an order from a man named Amrizal”.
Authorities arrested the two defendants after they gave the car key to an accomplice named Amiruddin upon arrival in Medan. Authorities found the illicit drugs they had hidden in two backpacks inside the minivan.
Amrizal was shot dead in another raid about two days later, while Amiruddin was sent to lifetime imprisonment on Wednesday.
Last month, the Medan District Court sentenced two men to death for smuggling 100 kilograms of methamphetamine from Penang, Malaysia, to Medan. The two are Medan residents Edy Suryadi and Arman of Aceh, who were arrested in Medan last year.
