The installation of the 'rumpon' aims to increase the economic potential of fish resources in Thousand Islands.
ome 48 rumpon (artificial reefs) have been scattered in Thousand Islands regency waters north of Jakarta with the goal of providing habitats for marine organisms.
“Eighteen rumpon were installed off Dayung Island, while the remaining were in Tidung Island waters,” Thousand Islands Food Security, Marine and Agriculture Agency head Sutrisno said, adding that the rumpon were installed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
He said the locations were chosen based on a survey and feedback from locals.
“They were installed not too far from corals. If it is too near, it will damage the coral. They were [placed] 30 meters deep,” he said, as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
The 2.5 meter-tall rumpon, which were made of dolken wood and dry coconut leaves, are 3 meters wide at their base and 2.5 meters wide at the top.
The installation aims to increase the economic potential of fish resources in Thousand Islands.
“With the rumpon installation we want fisheries resources to be more abundant,” he added.
The installation of the rumpon was the first this year. Sutrisno said that the agency had installed rumpon in waters off Pramuka Island and Panggang Island last year.
In addition, the Jakarta Food Security, Marine and Agriculture Agency plans to install larger rumpon made of concrete next year. (sau)
