T

wo young children were found dead on Saturday in a fishpond belonging to a neighbor in Simpang Gambir subdistrict, Lingga Bayu district of Mandailing Natal regency, North Sumatera.

Local residents found the bodies of the two siblings, Nazla Lubis, 3, and Ananda Riswan Lubis, 4, in the fish pond at about 6:15 p.m. local time on Feb. 16. The children were buried on Sunday.

Mandailing Natal Police criminal investigation chief Adj. Comr. Dhamos Aritonang said it was thought the two children could have fallen into the fishpond while they were playing.

“When they were found, they were floating [in the water],” Dhamos said Sunday. He said local residents took them to the nearest clinic but neither could be resuscitated.

“We have questioned a number of witnesses to obtain information on the deaths of the two children,” said Dharmos, adding that the owner of the fishpond had also been questioned.

Last November, the 16-month-old grandson of Coordinating Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto drowned when he fell into a fishpond at the family's residence in Kebayoran, South Jakarta.

Indonesia does not have a water safety program for children.
