akarta Environment Agency water management workers found a 5 meter long python in the Moorkervart River in Kalideres, West Jakarta, on Tuesday afternoon.
One of the workers, Afit Raharjo, said the snake was found by workers as they were scooping trash out of the river.
“While we were doing our usual kayaking [to patrol the river for trash], the snake suddenly appeared and one of the workers caught it. It was in the water but its head was visible [from the surface],” Afit said on Tuesday as reported by kompas.com.
He said the workers were able to handle the animal because it looked exhausted, although it fought back against the workers.
After the animal was captured, the workers returned it to the water because they were afraid it would die in their care.
“The snake was in pretty bad shape, we were afraid it might die if we took it with us. So we released it,” Afit said.
He said that the workers commonly encountered pythons in the river, adding that they had found four in one month.
“That [the location] was on the border between Jakarta and Tangerang. Perhaps the snake was from Tangerang and was carried by the current,” Afit said. (ami)
