angerang General Hospital in Banten caught fire on Monday night, forcing the authorities to relocate 156 patients to other hospitals around the area and Tangerang regency.

No casualties have been reported.

Hospital director Feriansyah said the patients were relocated to 23 hospitals in the city and three hospitals in Tangerang regency. He added that the evacuation ran smoothly although it took a long time.

“It took eight hours as the fire started at 11 p.m. Alhamdulilah [Thank God] it ran safely and the response from the other hospitals and communities in Tangerang was incredible,” he told kompas.com on Tuesday.

Before being sent to other hospitals, the patients were moved to the nearest safe place such as the hospital’s park or subdistrict offices. Those who needed quick medical treatment were taken to other hospitals.

The fire was caused by a faulty electrical panel on the hospital's third floor. The fire quickly spread to the second floor. It took 30 minutes for firefighters to extinguish the flames before the fire could spread to other crucial areas, Feriansyah said.

“The first person to notice the fire was our security supervisor. He smelled a burning cable and immediately told other security personnel to check floors,” he said. (fac/iwa)
