akarta Governor Anies Baswedan officially inaugurated on Thursday two newly renovated footbridges on Jl. Sudirman in South Jakarta; one located by the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) sports complex and the other at the Senayan traffic circle.

Anies said a third bridge in front of the Jakarta Police headquarters was also supposed to be inaugurated that day, but delays as construction had pushed back its completion.

The Jakarta administration began renovating the three footbridges on Nov. 1, 2018, and completion was targeted for December that same year.

"Walking is not just a journey but an experience, That’s why we should include an element of beauty and art into these bridges," Anies said on Thursday.

Bina Marga road agency head Hari Nugroho assured that the bridge in front of the Jakarta Police headquarters would be finished within the next few days.

However, the elevators at all three bridges won’t be operational until May, he added. Each elevator can carry around 15 people, including people in wheelchairs and who have other physical disabilities.

The three bridges were funded by penalties collected from a company that had breached the city’s floor area ratio (KLB) limit, PT PT Permadani Khatulistiwa Nusantara, which was about Rp 53 billion (US$ 3.76 million).(iwa)
