rosecutors demanded on Wednesday that the Bandung Corruption Court sentence the former head of Sukamiskin Penitentiary, Wahid Husen, to nine years in prison and fine him Rp 400 million (US$28,275) for allegedly taking bribes from prisoners.
"The defendant, Wahid Husen as head of the penitentiary, accepted gifts of money from prisoners," prosecutor Kresno Adi Wibowo of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) told the court.
Kresno claimed Wahid had allegedly received a car, luxury bag and Rp 39 million from convict Fahmi Darmansyah who was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for his role in another bribery case involving the purchase of equipment at the Maritime Security Agency.
He said Wahid also allegedly accepted Rp 39.5 million from convict Tubagus Chaeri Wardana who was jailed for one-and-a-half years for corruption in Banten.
Fuad Amin Imron, a convict who is serving 13 years in the penitentiary, also allegedly paid Wahid Rp 121 million, as well as paying for hotel stays and the renting of a car in Surabaya, Kresno said.
He added that the defendant allegedly gave the convicts air-conditioners, televisions, spring-beds in their cells and cell phones.
"The defendant also allegedly allowed the convicts to have medical check-ups at private hospitals," he said.
In a separate hearing, KPK prosecutors urged the court to sentence Wahid's driver, Hendry Saputra, to four years in prison and fine him Rp 100 million for allegedly brokering the deals.(jun)
