A driver died on the scene when a tree fell on his truck on Tuesday afternoon.
An uprooted tree on Jl. Dermaga Raya in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, fell on a truck and killed the driver, Suyatno, on Tuesday.
Duren Sawit Police crime unit chief First Insp. Fadoli said that Suyatno was driving down the road when the tree suddenly toppled and fell on his truck. The accident took place during the heavy rain and strong winds that hit the capital on Tuesday afternoon.
“The tree was beside Jl. Dermaga Raya and the victim was driving alone,” Fadoli said as quoted by kompas.com.
Fadoli said that a witness at the scene immediately called firefighters to rescue Suyatno.
“According to the witness’ account, the victim died at the scene while his hands were still holding the wheel,” he added.
East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency operational head Gatot Sulaeman said it was difficult for his team to recover Suyatno’s body because the tree had severely damaged the front of the truck.
“We should focus on recovering the body first. It’s pretty hard. The victim died at the scene,” Gatot said, noting that the process took an hour.
Jl. Dermaga Raya remained closed until the firefighters cleaned up the area. (vla)
