P

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and challenger Prabowo Subianto will debate the economy in their final showdown before election day at the Sultan Hotel in Jakarta on Saturday night.

The upcoming debate, which wraps up the seven-month campaign season, will be their last chance to convince undecided and swing voters, although analysts have argued that — based on the latest poll numbers — the candidates’ debate performance may not tip the electoral balance.

Political surveys have shown that Jokowi still leads the presidential race by double-digit margins, while the number of swing or undecided voters has shrunk to single-digit figures.

The presidential candidates and their running mates will present their ideas on the economy and social welfare, finance, investment, trade and industry.

Seeking his second five-year term, Jokowi is set to offer an extension of his current economic policy development; an infrastructure drive coupled with a renewed focus on human capital development in order to boost local workers’ competitiveness.

Jokowi-Ma’ruf Amin campaign spokesperson Arya Sinulingga said the human capital development was a key priority for the campaign and would be emphasized by the ticket during the debate.

“We want better quality human resources going forward, which is why we have to improve them,” he said.
