Fourteen pet pythons loose after floods

Six of the 14 pythons, each around 4 meters long, have been found, while people are still searching for the other eight.

ourteen pet pythons broke loose from their owners in Parung Dengdek, Wanaherang, Gunung Putri district and Citeureup district, Bogor regency, West Java, following heavy rain and floods in the area Thursday evening.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on his Twitter account that six of the 14 pythons, each around 4 meters long, had been found, while people were still searching for the other eight.

Four of the pythons were found at the Mahkota Villa Pesona housing complex in neighborhood unit (RT) 10, community unit (RW) 25, Bojong Kulur, Gunung Putri, Bogor. 

Sutopo warned people to be on the lookout for the missing pythons.

“If you find one, please report it to the authorities or volunteers,” Sutopo tweeted on Saturday evening.

The heavy rain in Bogor caused the Cikeas River to overflow, impacting several areas in Bogor and leading to the death of one person in Legog Nyenang, Kadumangu, Babakan Madang, according to Bogor Regency Disaster Mitigation Agency secretary Budi Pranowo.

“One person died, Ame, 80, because of her asthma, while other residents whose houses were affected by the floods evacuated to their relatives’ houses,” Budi said on Friday, kompas.com reported.

Floodwaters inundated 37 areas across Jakarta on Saturday, according to the Jakarta Disaster Management Agency.

The agency said the worst-hit neighborhoods were in East Jakarta where 21 areas were affected, while in South and West Jakarta 14 and two were affected, respectively. Up to 2,370 residents in East Jakarta were affected by the floods and had to be evacuated to temporary shelters in 15 locations. Two people also died in Jakarta during the flood. (ami)
