Government misses Q1 foreign tourist target Tourism Minister Arief Yahya (The Jakarta Post/Jerry Adiguna)

T

ourism Minister Arief Yahya said on Monday that the number of foreign tourist arrivals to Indonesia between January and April was below the government's target.

The minister referred to Statistics Indonesia’s (BPS) recent report on tourist arrivals in the first quarter this year.

According to BPS data, 5.12 million foreign tourists visited Indonesia from January to April this year, a monthly average of just 1.3 million. The government targeted to welcome 1.5 million foreign tourists a month. The 1.3 million tourists who visited Indonesia in April represented a 2.7 percent decrease compared to March.

“The figure [1.3 million foreign tourists] is not a good result as our target is 1.5 million a month, with an overall target of 18 million by the end of this year,” he said on Monday.

To achieve the foreign tourist target by the end of the year, Arief said the government would implement four strategic plans, namely boosting border tourism, offering hot deals, establishing tourism hub and optimizing low-cost carrier terminals (LCCT).

Arief said boosting border tourism was aimed at attracting more tourists from neighboring countries. Border tourism is seen an important source of tourists, with arrivals of foreign tourists via border points like Riau Islands from Singapore and Malaysia having grown in recent years.

The government also offers hot deal programs and big discounts on tourism packages, such as ferry ticket promotions [for border tourism] in the low season.
