T

he number of passenger traveling by airplane during the seven days prior to and seven days after Idul Fitri this year declined by 27.37 percent compared to last year.

According to the data provided by the Transportation Ministry’s research and development department, the total number of travelers using public transportation by land, sea, air and railway reached 18.34 million people, down by 2.42 percent on last year.

The head of the ministry’s research and development, Sugihardjo, said that in general the number of passengers on all transportation modes increased, except on air transportation. The number of travelers going by air dropped by 27.37 percent to 3.52 million people from 4.85 million people in 2018.

“Today [on Friday] we close the command center for the Idul Fitri Traffic exodus. From seven days prior to seven days after Idul Fitri, all [passengers] on all transportation modes recorded an increase, but not for air transportation,” Sugihardjo said on Friday.

Meanwhile, the number of people traveling by train during Idul Fitri this year totaled 5.07 million, a 6.62 percent increase compared with last year. As many as 4.16 million people traveled using land transportation, a 11.19 percent increase from last year’s figure.

The number of people traveling by ferry for short distance sea transportation and long distance sea transportation was recorded at 4.06 million and 1.48 million, rising by 0.43 percent and 8.77 percent respectively, compared with last year's figure.

To support people returning home during the 2019 Idul Fitri holiday, the central and local government, as well as public and private enterprises provided free transportation, which increased significantly compared with the previous year.
