T

hree special teams have been established to find the armed men believed to be behind the robbery of a jewelry store in Balaraja, Tangerang regency in Banten that cost nearly Rp 2 billion (US$139,310) in losses.

Tangerang Police chief Sr. Comr. Sabilul Alif said the teams aimed to hunt down the alleged perpetrators.

“We have formed three special teams to chase the perpetrators to several regions,” he said on Sunday as reported by tribunnews.com, adding that he was leading one of the teams.

He declined to disclose the areas targeted as they were part of the investigation.

“We have identified the perpetrators,” he said.

The police have moved swiftly with the case as it gained public attention following a viral video of the alleged robbery. The video showed the CCTV recording of the store where the two alleged robbers stole various pieces of jewelry from the display counter.

The incident happened on Saturday morning while the store employee was attending to some customers. The alleged robbers entered the premise and directly took the jewelry causing employees and customers in the store to panic.

In the 30-second video, two armed men are seen entering Mas Pertama jewelry store. One man wearing a cap, black shirt and black shorts is seen with a firearm while another man is carrying a sword.

Seven trays of jewelry, weighing 6 kilograms, were taken from Mas Permata jewelry store.

The man wearing a cap proceeded to jump over the display counter and started taking trays of necklaces from the unlocked counter before handing them out to his partner.

After taking the trays nearest to him, he then rushed to the other side of the counter to snatch a tray of bracelets. The other man, who was wearing a black shirt and trousers, stood in front of the door while bagging the golden pieces of jewelry.

They managed to escape in a car with stolen jewelry worth a total of Rp 1.6 billion. It was reported that the car, moving toward Serang area, was chased and pelted with rocks by residents at the location.

“Locals and eyewitnesses threw stones at the suspects’ car,” Sabilul added.

The stones hit the rear windshield until it shattered, according to an eyewitness as reported by tempo.co.

People at the scene claimed they did not recognize the men as their faces were covered by masks.

Nobody was harmed in the robbery. As for the weapons, police are still unsure of their authenticity.

“We are still unable to confirm whether the weapons they were carrying were real or just imitations,” said Sabilul

This is not the first armed robbery to have taken place in Tangerang. In June 2017, a woman named Italia Chandra Kirana Putri, 22, was shot dead after confronting two men who were trying to steal her motorcycle.

Police said after their capture that the perpetrators had been involved in several violent robberies.

Tangerang has also seen juvenile armed robbery, as a group of teenagers allegedly robbed customers of an internet cafe in Ciputat, Tangerang in 2017. The gang was armed with machetes and sickles. They were charged with stealing visitors’ wallets and mobile phones. (eyc)
