he weeklong 11th ASEAN Schools Games officially began on Thursday with an opening ceremony held at Holy Terang Bangsa School Stadium in Semarang, Central Java.
Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi said the country was honored to host the event.
“It is truly an honor that the ASEAN School Sports Council entrusted Indonesia with the hosting duties for this year's edition,” Imam said during the opening ceremony, adding that it was important to provide student athletes with opportunities as they were the ones that would build the country's future.
“Let sports be the fire for us to reach our dreams. [The Games] are also important to maintain unity and solidarity among countries in ASEAN and the world,” he added.
ASEAN School Sports Council president Romaizah lauded the 2019 edition for welcoming 1,600 athletes – an increase from the previous event. She thanked Semarang for pulling out a memorable Games.
The annual multisport event, which runs from Thursday until July 25, features athletics, badminton, basketball, pencak silat, sepak takraw, swimming, tennis and volleyball.
Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo said the event was not just about competition, as it also symbolized hard work and teamwork.
