N

on-biodegradable waste has been found clogging sewer pipes in Mega Kuningan, one of the Jakarta’s most high-end business districts.

The Mega Kuningan business district in South Jakarta is home to many foreign embassies, offices and hotels.

“From Mega Kuningan, a total of 10 sacks of trash [were collected|, which included underwear, clothing, diapers and a large amount of condoms. We also found 35 meters of cable,” said city-owned sewerage company PD PAL Jaya director Subekti on Friday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Subekti explained that the company’s workers initially saw that water was overflowing from a sewer pipe near the Chinese Embassy.

After being investigated, it was found that the sewer pipe had become clogged with different types of trash.

Subekti added that the trash originated from offices, apartments and hotels located in Mega Kuningan.

Subekti stated that the trash had been flushed down the toilet.

“I have asked the management of these buildings to make clear to their tenants that they are not to flush any trash down the toilet,” said Subekti.

PAL Jaya is still cleaning the trash from the sewer, and may be required to continue work over the weekend. (tru)
