Talk of the week: Cycling to honor Gandhiji’s legacy

To commemorate what would have been Indian peace icon Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birthday — often referred to as Gandhiji or the Mahatma — the Indian Embassy, in cooperation with Gandhi Memorial Intercontinental School in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, will host a cycling event.

The event, themed “Cycling for Non-violence, Peace and Truth” is set to be held on July 31 from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

It seeks to invite participants to honor Gandhi’s legacy by riding their bicycles on a 9-kilometer track stretching from the front of India House on Jl. Taman Suropati No. 6, Menteng, Central Jakarta, to Jl. HBR Motik, Kemayoran.

Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Pradeep Kumar Rawat and Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan will flag off the event.

The late Indian peace icon Mahatma Gandhi left us behind in 1948, when he was killed by a Hindu fundamentalist in Delhi, India.

His teachings, emphasizing the importance of nonviolent passive resistance and civil disobedience, however, remain everlasting. Gandhi is known for his ascetic lifestyle — he often dressed only in a loincloth and shawl — he was imprisoned several times during his pursuit of noncooperation.

To honor his legacy, a United Nations General Assembly resolution on June 15, 2007, established Gandhi’s birthday, Oct. 2, as the International Day of Non-Violence to disseminate his message, including through education and public awareness campaigns. The commemoration also seeks to promote a culture of peace, tolerance and understanding.
