Residents pin hopes on city’s affordable low-cost apartments

Construction of KS Tubun was completed in 2017, after two years of lying vacant, the apartment complex will be officially launched by Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan in August along with 11 other low-cost apartment complexes across the city to provide a total of 9,430 available units. The apartments are part of the city’s plan to build 14,564 low-cost apartment units in the next five years for low-income families.

ega Tamara, 53, was excited last Wednesday checking out his new unit in the KS Tubun low-cost rental apartment (rusunawa) complex in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, where he is looking forward to living with his family in the years to come.

He said he was lucky to pass the verification process to get a unit in the complex after he registered his family several months ago.

Mega is unemployed, but his wife has a non-fixed income as an online garment seller earning up to Rp 5 million (US$357) per month.

Mega, his wife and two children were among the 117 families qualified to get one of the city-owned apartment units available for lease. The apartments are aimed at Jakarta-based lower income families with monthly incomes of between Rp 4 million and Rp 7 million.

About 300 more applicants are still undergoing the verification process to fill the three towers with a capacity of 524 units, four of which are for people with disabilities.

“The selection was strict,” Mega recalled.

“We had to do a drug test and get a police clearance letter,” he said, adding that the family had eyed a unit in KS Tubun as they currently lived nearby in a rented house in Petamburan, also in Tanah Abang.
