xpansive sidewalks revitalization projects are underway in Jakarta amid plans to uplift the notorious car-loving city with poor sidewalks to a more pedestrian-friendly city.

The Jakarta Bina Marga Road Agency is focusing its works in Kemang and along Jl. Satrio in South Jakarta as well as Cikini and Senen in Central Jakarta, which were designated as part of the regional strategic activities by Governor Anies Baswedan in July 2018.

“[Central and South Jakarta sidewalk projects] are going as planned with progress of about 10 percent into construction,” the agency’s section head for road network and utilities planning Riri Asnita told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

The sidewalks were being constructed to accommodate all types of pedestrians including those with disabilities.

“[On the expanded sidewalks] there will be a yellow guiding line for blind pedestrians. We are also planning to add ramps on the sidewalks,” Riri added.

The sidewalks project is part of the city’s program to overhaul sidewalks infamous for their poor condition, which are often invaded by street vendors or have uneven surfaces full of holes.

The city administration set a target to revitalize 160 kilometers of sidewalks last year. Some 80 kilometers have been revamped, including on Jakarta’s main thoroughfares of Jl. Sudirman and Jl. MH Thamrin. The remaining 80 kilometers are expected to be completed by December.
