apua-based film community Papuan Voices has held the third-ever Papua Film Festival as part of an effort to raise awareness on the role Papuan women play in society and the changing gender dynamics in traditional culture.
The festival, which carried the theme “Perempuan Penjaga Tanah Papua” (The Female Guards of Papua), screened 10 out of a total 17 submitted films revolving around Papuan women from Aug. 7 to 9 in Sorong, West Papua.
Papua Film Festival coordinator Sisca Manam said that, although respect had been growing for Papuan women in recent years, there was still a yawning gap that separated men and women in the region.
“[The gap] is reflected, for instance, in how we still lack the same education opportunities as our male counterparts,” Sisca said.
Furthermore, she said Papuan women faced various forms of discrimination over the years simply because of their gender, income level and race.
It was these everyday plights experienced by Papuan women that had inspired Papuan Voices to focus on the issue of Papuan gender politics in the third iteration of its film festival, Sisca said.
The 10 films screened at the festival are Pahlawan Tanpa Tanda Jasa (A Hero Without Medals) directed by Christian G. Tigor Kogoya, Perempuan di Tanahnya (A Woman in Her Land) by Kristina Soge and Dion Kafudji, 30 Tahun Su Lewat (30 Years Have Passed) by Lidya Monaliza Upuya, Keadilan di Tanah Sendiri (Justice in One’s Own Land) by Nelson Lokobal, Menembus Batas (Breaking the Limit) by Naomy Wenda, Daerah Hilang (Missing Region) by Helena Kobogau, Moinyayo Hekhe Mokhonate by Alberth Yomo, Sasi Ibu-Ibu Kampung Kapatcol Misool Barat by Wawan Mangile, Mre Wenteh by Nelius Wenda, and Agmai by Agus Kalalu.
