he government is considering an expansion of rail-based public transportation in Greater Jakarta, namely the MRT and the LRT, in the hope of encouraging more people to make the switch from cars and motorbikes.
The suggestion to increase rail-based mass transportation results from a study conducted by various government agencies under the helm of the Office of the Coordinating Economic Minister and the Jakarta International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to devise a plan for Phase 2 of the Greater Jakarta Urban Transportation Policy Integration (JUTPI).
The study for JUTPI Phase 2 suggests that the Jakarta MRT network, currently operating only a line of 15.7 kilometers between Lebak Bulus Station in South Jakarta and Bundaran HI Station in Central Jakarta, be expanded to 426 km with up to 10 lines by 2035, serving not only Jakarta but also satellite cities.
Meanwhile, the LRT, the study suggests, should be expanded to a network of 10 routes with lines totaling 201 km by 2035.
Two separate entities are responsible for the LRT. The LRT Jakarta is run by Jakarta-owned company PT LRT Jakarta, which has completed the first phase of the project with a 5.8 km line from Velodrome in East Jakarta to Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta. The line is currently in an indefinite free public trial period.
