resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and his Cabinet look set to receive brand new sets of wheels, with a budget of more than Rp 147 billion (US$10.4 million) earmarked for the purchase of new government cars for high-level officials.
Jokowi will begin his second term in October and will travel in a Mercedes Benz S 600 Guard while his ministers will each be driven in Toyota Crown 2.5 HV G-Executives.
State Secretariat spokesman Eddy Cahyono Sugiarto said the cars currently used by Indonesia’s highest officials had been in use for more than 10 years.
“The official cars used by VVIPs such as the President, ministers, ministry level officials, state institution heads, former presidents and former vice presidents, have been in use for more than 10 years. Many are damaged and inefficient, and are not fit for state officials,” Eddy said on Aug. 22, as reported on the secretariat’s website.
According to Eddy, the current fleet requires significant funds for servicing and maintenance, and will also pose a safety risk if not replaced.
Using the 2019 budget, the secretariat will purchase two presidential cars and 101 cars for 2019-2024 cabinet members and other ministry level officials. The cars will be purchased from PT Astra International Tbk-TSO, which won an open tender.
As reported by tempo.co, the budget for purchasing the cars exceeds Rp 147 billion.
