In an attempt to encourage people to walk and use public transportation instead of relying on private vehicles, the Jakarta administration plans to revitalize more sidewalks.
The endeavor is part of city’s strategy to curb worsening pollution, as mandated by Gubernatorial Instruction No. 66/2019 on air quality.
Jakarta Bina Marga road agency head Hari Nugroho said the city aimed to overhaul sidewalks on at least 25 roads in 2020.
“The instruction says 25 [roads], but we’re ready to do 31,” he said at a press conference, noting that the city would allocate Rp 1.1 trillion (US$77 million) to the project.
“As [Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan] said, we should prioritize sidewalks near public transportation services like the MRT, Transjakarta, LRT and commuter train [stations]," he added.
Next year’s projects will focus on sidewalks near eight MRT stations, namely Lebak Bulus, Fatmawati, Cipete Raya, Haji Nawi, Blok A, Blok M, Bendungan Hilir and Setiabudi.
