Gerindra’s argument is proximity. Jonggol, which is about 48.7 kilometers or a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Jakarta, had long been cited as a possible location.
embers of the House of Representatives have said that they fully support President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s proposal to relocate the capital, though not all of them agree with his pick for its new location.
The Gerindra Party, the second-largest party at the House, proposed Jonggol, a subdictrict in Bogor regency, West Java, as a better alternative. “Why [pick] East Kalimantan, if you can [move it] to Jonggol?” the party’s deputy chairman, Edhy Prabowo, told reporters on Tuesday.
Gerindra’s argument is proximity. Jonggol, which is about 48.7 kilometers or a one-and-a-half-hour drive from Jakarta, had long been cited as a possible location. However, some expressed doubts over whether the government could acquire land there to build the new capital.
“The cost of moving the capital could reach Rp 500 trillion [US$35.1 billion], so we should discuss this together. Do not rush it,” he said.
Jokowi sent on Monday a letter to House Speaker Bambang Soesatyo, informing him about the government’s decision to build the new capital in part of North Penajam Paser regency and part of Kutai Kartanegara regency in East Kalimantan. Construction for the relocation process is expected to finish in 2024.
The government was drafting a bill that would serve as the legal foundation for the relocation and set a target to submit it to the House by the end of this year, said National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) head Bambang Brodjonegoro.
“We are still drafting the bill,” he told The Jakarta Post.
