President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said he would listen to suggestions from the public as well as civil society organizations and use them to evaluate the 10 names submitted by the selection committee.
After some four months, the selection process for the leadership of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) finally reached its climax on Monday, when the selection committee submitted to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo the list of the 10 final candidates who will compete for the antigraft body’s top posts.
Graft watchdogs immediately criticized the list, saying it comprised several names deemed problematic and not fit to lead the KPK. They urged the President to use his presidential authority to remove the “problematic” candidates from the list.
On Monday, the selection committee announced the list of final candidates comprising nine men and one woman: incumbent KPK commissioner Alexander Marwata, the National Police’s Insp. Gen. Firli Bahuri, Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) auditor I Nyoman Wara, prosecutor Johanis Tanak, lawyer Lili Pintauli Siregar, Judge Nawawi Pomolango, academics Luthfi Jayadi Kurniawan and Nurul Ghufron, as well as civil servants Roby Arya and Sigit Danang Joyo.
In the past, the President would usually immediately submit the list to the House of Representatives, which would then conduct a final screening to select five new commissioners for the antigraft body. The 2002 KPK Law stipulates that the President has 14 days to submit the names to the legislative body after receiving it from the selection committee.
However, Jokowi said he would listen to suggestions from the public as well as civil society organizations and use them to evaluate the 10 names submitted by the selection committee.
“I am not being reckless [in this matter],” President Jokowi told a group of chief editors, including The Jakarta Post’s, at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday.
