gurah Rai International Airport in Bali is the first airport in Indonesia to operate passport autogates, an automated system that allows passengers to have their passport and biometric features scanned and verified electronically.
The new system will gradually replace the previous and slower system, in which immigration officials manually check and verify passports.
The autogate system is one of three advanced services officially launched on Tuesday in a modest ceremony at the airport's international departure terminal. The services are parts of the airport's ongoing effort to provide passengers with a better experience, enhanced safety and minimal queuing time.
The two other services were the X-ray Automated Tray Return System (ATRS) and automated boarding pass scanner.
Immigration director general Ronny F. Sompie praised the launch of the systems, stating that they would provide visitors to the island with a better experience. He disclosed that the passport autogate system underwent a testing period in October 2018 when it was utilized to process the passports of the participants of the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bali. In that trial period, the system successfully handled more than 2,000 passports.
The system comprises electronic gates equipped with multiple scanners. The passengers would have to scan their passports to gain entry to the interior part of the gate, where a series of instructions on the screen would guide them through the steps to have their fingerprints and facial features verified.
“The autogate system is directly linked to our Immigration Management Information System (SIMKIM) to provide real-time information updates across the network. So it is a very secure system and hopefully the autogate system would be quickly adopted by other major airports in Indonesia,” Sompie said.
