undreds of university students have been injured after clashes erupted following protests in front of the House of Representatives in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, with at least one student found in critical condition and undergoing surgery.
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Gatot Eddy Pramono said at least 265 students had been treated at hospitals across the capital since Tuesday afternoon, ranging from light to serious injuries.
While around 254 had returned home after being treated, eleven stayed in hospitals overnight for further medical treatment, kompas.com reported.
“Some students [received medical care] after being exposed to tear gas, while others were possibly [injured] because they got pushed while running,” Gatot said, “Anyway, we are still looking into [the causes] behind the students’ injuries.”
Rallies over what critics and protesters deem attempts by the state to roll back democracy ended in clashes on Tuesday, with security forces firing tear gas and water cannons after some protesters brought down part of the fence around the House compound.
Clashes between security personnel and demonstrators continued until the evening around the House compound, with some people burning tires on the streets. National Police spokesperson Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo, however, said the chaos in the evening did not involve university students and had been staged by rioters.
At least 10 students were admitted to Pelni Hospital in West Jakarta for medical treatment on Tuesday afternoon, said Ichwan Ananda from the hospital’s legal division.
