The panel of judges argued the blackout was caused by a technical disruption and thus was not against the law..
he South Jakarta District Court has rejected in its entirety a civil lawsuit filed by Ariyo Bimmo, the owner of a number of dead fish, against state-owned electricity firm PT PLN over a massive blackout in August.
The judges argued the blackout was caused by a technical disruption was thus not against the law.
“A request for compensation, as requested by the plaintiff, cannot be applied,” Judge Elfian said during the hearing on Sept. 30. "[We] reject all of the plaintiff's claims."
The judges referred to the PLN’s statement that the blackout was caused by a technical disruption that was a form of protection to save greater things, like human lives, equipment, or the electricity system itself.
The electricity firm also stated during the hearing that the cause of the blackout was the overgrown branches of sengon trees caught between transmission lines.
Ariyo said he would not appeal the court ruling.
“We will not file an objection but we truly regret [the ruling],” he said afterwards on Monday, tempo.co reported.
