Nissan witnessed a drastic increase in sales in August this year amid a decrease in sales among almost all carmakers
apanese auto giant Nissan remains one of the most successful players in the Indonesian car market thanks to the successful debut of its New Livina model released in February this year.
The car producer witnessed a dramatic increase from 85 units in August 2018 to 1,228 in August this year amid a decrease in sales among almost all carmakers, according to the Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo) data.
While the car producer has yet to release the latest sales figures, Nissan’s Livina series accounted for 941 units sold in August, Gaikindo data showed.
The strong performance contrasts with its former Grand Livina brand that had been on a rocky road. Nissan sold 8,282 units of the model in 2015 but sales fell to 5,309 units in 2016. Sales slightly recovered to 6,204 units in 2017 but sharply plummeted to 2,437 units in 2018.
Amid the shaky performance in recent years, PT Nissan Motor Indonesia, Isao Sekiguchi refused to divulge the 2019 target. He added that he would employ different strategies from those of the last five years, although he declined to elaborate.
“[The year-end sales] will depend on the market demand, we’ll see how it goes,” Sekiguchi said, as quoted by Kompas.com last February.
Meanwhile Chinese carmaker Wuling is one of the fastest-growing carmakers in Indonesia despite failing to record the same year-on-year increase in August as previously. It has become among the top-10 best-selling car brands in Indonesia in only two years, Gaikindo data shows.
