Dozens of mourners crowded a cemetery in Cipulir, South Jakarta, on Friday morning as they said their final goodbyes to Akbar Alamsyah, 19, who had died from serious injuries sustained during a protest outside the House of Representatives complex in Central Jakarta on Sept. 25.

Suffering severe blows to the head during the student rally, which had turned violent as protesters clashed with police personnel, he spent 15 days in a coma before succumbing to his injuries on Thursday.

Dozens of protesters went missing after the unrest – Akbar was one of them. Three days later, his family found him in a comatose state at the National Police Hospital in Kramatjati, East Jakarta.

Akbar was buried at around 8:30 a.m. on Friday, after a prayer at a nearby mosque. After the burial, his mother Rosminah wept over his grave, repeatedly saying, “My son was tortured”, while family members tried to calm her.

Rosminah alleged that Akbar had been tortured, pointing to his head injuries and swollen face. But according to the police, Akbar was injured after falling off a fence as he was trying to flee the scene of the student protest.

Akbar and his friends were reportedly watching the demonstration when it turned violent and ran to avoid being arrested.
