ice president-elect Ma’ruf Amin will remain as chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) until after the council’s national meeting next year.

Ma’ruf stated that the decision was made after a meeting with the organization’s leaders on Oct. 11-13 in West Nusa Tenggara. During the meeting, Ma’ruf said, it was unanimously agreed that he should stay on as chairman, albeit inactive.

“They agreed to keep my chairman position. However, due to my duties as the vice-president, I will be inactive for a while,” Ma’ruf said, adding that he would perform his duty as MUI chairman until the council’s national meeting to elect new leaders next year.

He went further explaining that his current status as vice-president elect did not violate the organization’s internal policy since Ma’ruf was elected after he became MUI chairman.

“During MUI’s national work meeting, the other members talked me out of stepping down from my position until the national meeting,” Ma’ruf said as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.

As he will be an inactive chairman, two deputy chairmen Yunahar Ilyas and Zainut Tauhid have been appointed as acting chairmen.

“There are people who think [continuing as chairman] is against the organization’s internal policy, but after we discussed it some more, we came to the conclusion that it doesn’t violate the rules,” he added.

The People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) is slated to inaugurate on Sunday President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Ma’ruf, who are set to serve as the country’s leadership pair until 2024. (dpk)
